Clean Green Cars 2012 CO2 data released

New data has been released from Clean Green Cars, (whose aim is to provide clear, easily understood advice about choosing and using cars in a more environmentally considerate way) regarding the European Commission’s outline to reduce CO2 emissions. The CO2 limit set for this year is 130 g/km; however the report shows that the industry, as a whole, will not hit the target. What is also included in the latest Clean Green Cars report is data focusing on individual manufacturers’ average CO2 reduction performance year to date, outlining that not all manufacturers have improved enough to meet the goal. In fact, there are now 15 (out of 31) major manufacturers which are below the overall target figure of 130 g/km of CO2.

Two of the top car manufacturers with the highest CO2 emissions are Porsche (201 g/km of CO2) and Land Rover (196 g/km of CO2), but since last year they have both cut their emissions by 10%. Surprising to see in the data table was Mini, who in the past has ranked top on many of the cleanest car lists, having actually slightly increased their carbon emissions from 128.04 average CO2 g/km in 2011 to 128.33 average CO2 g/km this year, giving them a decrease in improvement of -0.23%. Although, even with most missing the desired targets for 2012, the report goes on to say that there won’t be any penalties. Full compliance is not due until 2015 and only the lowest polluting 65% of each manufacturer’s range have to meet the target.

This is a very interesting look into how major vehicle manufacturers are performing in comparison with each other in the race to reduce carbon emissions. To read a full explanation of all the data and a list of all manufacturers’ figures, visit the Clean Green Cars website here.
