New Euro 6 compliant engines for Renault Trucks

Some important news from Renault Trucks announced this week. Renault Trucks will present its Euro 6* compliant engines at the IAA show (International Automobile Exhibition) in Hanover from September 20-27, 2012. The new Euro 6 engines from Renault Trucks deliver reduced pollution and keep a check on fuel consumption and Renault Trucks Euro 6 engines will deliver high performance, reliability and optimised consumption. The information which was provided by Renault in a press release says, that in order to comply with the new EU regulations on cutting polluting emissions, Renault have utilised different technologies and are choosing the most appropriate and efficient engine size and future applications. The new engines will be added to Renault’s trucks when the new standard becomes compulsory in January 2014 (January 2013 for new homologations).

For its heavy duty range, Renault Trucks will offer a new six cylinder 11 L engine to be known as the DTI 11. This will be available with three power ratings: 380 hp (1800 Nm), 430 hp (2050 Nm) and 460 hp (2200 Nm). The DTI 11 engine is combined with an SCR post treatment system for reducing polluting emissions to comply with the Euro 6 regulation. Renault have achieved this reduction by cleverly combining solutions such as; exhaust gases recirculation during engine start-up phases, the use of controlled valves at the intake and the exhaust as well as specific combustion strategies. The post treatment system is fitted with a particulate filter, as is the case with all Renault Trucks Euro 6 engines. This enables the level of particle emissions to be considerably reduced, capturing virtually all of them, even the very smallest. The DTI 13 will be available with the following power ratings: 440 hp (2200 Nm), 480 hp (2400 Nm) and 520 hp (2550 Nm).

In regards to Renault's medium duty range, Renault Trucks has developed a new four cylinder, 5 L engine, to be known as the DTI 5. It will be available with 210 hp (800 Nm) and 240 hp (900 Nm) versions. In the DTI 8, this will feature six cylinders in line with a displacement of 8 L. It will be available in 250 hp (950 Nm), 280 hp (1050 Nm) and 320 hp (1200 Nm) versions. Both the 5 L and 8 L engines are fitted with an EGR system which recycles part of the exhaust gases during combustion and reduces the amount of nitrogen oxide (NOx) produced by the engine, then the remaining NOx is then eliminated by catalysis via the SCR system. Finally, the particulate filter enables the vehicle to comply with the very low level of particle emissions.

* Euro 6 Standard

"All vehicles equipped with a diesel engine will be required to substantially reduce their emissions of nitrogen oxides as soon as the Euro 6 standard enters into force. For example, emissions from cars and other vehicles intended to be used for transport will be capped at 80 mg/km (an additional reduction of more than 50 % compared to the Euro 5 standard). Combined emissions of hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides from diesel vehicles will also be reduced. These will be capped at, for example, 170 mg/km for cars and other vehicles intended to be used for transport. The Euro 6 standard will come into force on 1 September 2014 for the approval of vehicles, and from 1 January 2015 for the registration and sale of new types of cars. In addition to complying with the emission limits mentioned above, vehicle manufacturers must also ensure that devices fitted to control pollution are able to last for a distance of 160 000 km. In addition, conformity must be checked for a period of 5 years or over a distance of 100 000 km." - Information provided from EUROPA, the European Union website, found under Summaries of EU legislation - Reduction of pollutant emissions from light vehicles.
