"Overloading a tyre compromises handling", warns mytyres.co.uk

Delticom, Europe’s leading online tyre retailer (operates in the UK as mytyres.co.uk), has recently posted a press release warning van drivers of the dangers of overloading and under inflation of tyres. They say that tyres on vans and light commercial vehicles are often put through a lot of punishment during their life. Arguably tyres on light commercial vehicles or vans are subjected to more abuse than other vehicles. Most recent figures from the Vehicle and Operator Service Agency‘s (VOSA) roadworthiness checks has shown that 26 percent of these vehicles were prohibited because of the condition of their tyres.

Delticom have drawn attention to what they feel is the major causes of tyre problems on vans. Overloading coupled with under inflation and the stress placed on tyres under these circumstances. Tyres carrying excessive loads can lead to heat to build up in the tyres which can adversely affect their grip and handling characteristics. Should the tyre fail because of these issues, the results can be fatal. Running tyres above their recommended load capacity – details of which are contained in the vehicle handbook - can also dramatically increase tread wear and the operating life cycle of the tyre leading to premature wear and replacement. This means that operators would be forced to replace tyres more often adding significantly to their operational costs. Overloading a tyre compromises a vehicle’s handling characteristics which can result in longer stopping distances and the potential loss of steering say experts. Aside from that, the risk of a tyre failure is increased when the van is overloaded as it can not only endanger the driver but passengers and other road users.

Their publication has flagged up a good point regarding tyre safety. With winter just around the corner, there have been a good few articles highlighting the need to perform tyre and vehicle maintenance checks before any adverse weather rolls in. Whether you drive a van, car, or motorcycle, please take a moment to consider if your vehicle is in need of any safety checks before winter conditions arrives. Better to be safe than sorry, I feel.
