Aviva and Dayinsure launch short term motor insurance solution for people learning to drive

Great news this week announced for learner drivers. Dayinsure, in partnership with Aviva, the UK’s largest insurer, has launched a short term motor insurance solution for people learning to drive.   Unlike almost any other offering currently available, Dayinsure Learner can be bought to provide cover from just 1 day up to 3 months. It is available for any motorist aged 17 and over who holds a provisional driving licence and meets the acceptance criteria*.

This temporary insurance enables a learner driver to borrow a car to practise driving. The standalone Dayinsure Learner policy helps to address the issues of adding a provisional licence holder to an annual policy which can be expensive, with any subsequent claim affecting the No Claim Discount and invoking a large excess.

Brian Spinks, head of broker personal lines, Aviva UKGI explains:  “We fully recognise the difficulties that buying insurance as a learner driver can present, particularly for young drivers and their families.  We are, therefore, especially delighted that Dayinsure Learner provides a cost-effective, flexible solution that allows them to perfect their driving skills without breaking the bank.”

One thing to note about this cover is that Dayinsure Learner has been designed to exclude cover between the hours of 10pm and 6am, when they deem a majority of learner drivers are least likely to be practising their driving skills. Brian Spinks continues:  “By limiting the hours we provide cover we are able to not only keep our prices competitively low, but offer an excess of just £250."

Policies can be bought online within minutes from as little as £2.50 a day (A policy which provides cover for 84 days can cost as little as £2.50 per day), with insurance documents emailed instantly to the policyholder at the time of purchase.   Offering the ultimate in convenience, Dayinsure Learner can also be bought via smartphones and tablets.  What’s more, policyholders benefit from Aviva’s award-winning claims service which offers access to 24/7 claims help lines, 365 days a year.

I think this is a great option for those of any age who are learning to drive. Mounting costs can certainly be a prohibitive factor in learning to drive, as highlighted in one of my September posts, "IAM say young motorists are being priced out of driving."  Just make sure you understand all of the wording in the policy and don't forget to ask questions if you are unsure of anything regarding what is and is not covered in the plan before you commit to purchasing.

*The acceptance criteria are:  The learner driver must be a permanent UK resident and must be accompanied by a qualified driver aged 25 or over who has held a full UK licence for at least 3 years , Car groups 1-30, maximum vehicle value £25k, No claims, convictions or points, No cover operates between 10pm – 6am, The vehicle must not be owned by the policyholder, The vehicle must be insured annually (by the registered keeper), The vehicle must be registered in the UK, The vehicle must have no more than 6 seats (including the driver’s), The vehicle must not be a Hire or Rental vehicle, The vehicle must not be in a police compound, No cover is provided once the policyholder passes their driving test.
