GEM Motoring Assist has refreshed its ‘Courtesy on the Road’ leaflet

Does driving during the Holiday period turn you into a motor way meanie? If so, to help motorists avoid the stress associated with winter driving, GEM Motoring Assist has refreshed its ‘Courtesy on the Road’ leaflet. With adverse driving conditions and the stressfulness of the festive season, common courtesy on the road can reach a low point during the winter months.

The road safety organisation and breakdown cover company has published top tips for motorists, including a ‘Courtesy Driving Code’, to help reduce a major cause of conflict on the road: stress. The leaflet also features a checklist to help combat tense situations such as breakdowns, traffic build ups, and noisy distractions.

David Williams MBE, CEO of GEM Motoring Assist, commented: "Rather than getting frustrated or angry with other road users, we want to encourage motorists to be patient this winter and show compassion to other drivers. We hope that this newly designed leaflet will help highlight how easy this is to achieve.”

In GEM's recent press release, they provided these helpful tips on how to remain courteous on the road this Christmas.

The Courtesy Driving Code:

1. Share the road safely

2. Keep calm, show restraint

3. Remember: others are not out to annoy you

4. Do not compete or retaliate

5. Be patient in traffic

6. Set an example to others

7. Give way at busy junctions

8. Put yourself in the position of the other driver

9. Say ‘thank you’

10. Say ‘sorry’

Chairman of the National Campaign for Courtesy, Peter G. Foot, comments: “We are delighted to be supporting GEM Motoring Assist in this excellent campaign, which we hope will help to make our roads safer. Courteous behaviour is a vital ingredient to ensure a better society for everyone, but courtesy on our busy roads could be a matter of life or death and we fully endorse this initiative.”

Okay, to be honest, sometimes I am guilty of shouting (in the car with the windows up) at other discourteous drivers and forgetting tip #3. Oops, does that make me a motor way meanie then? Well, to quote tip #10, 'sorry.' GEM also provides a printable copy of the ‘Courtesy on the Road’ leaflet which you and I can download by clicking here.
