Is the tax disc about to be axed?

Could it be the end of the road for the tax disc? For many years (nearly 90, I think) this circular piece of paper has proudly been displayed in our vehicle windscreens to represent proof that we have indeed paid our road tax duty, but the BVRLA have just posted news that the government is giving serious consideration to abolishing the tax disc. Unfortunately no, not the tax itself, just the physical piece of paper. Shucks!

The BVRLA, British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association, has welcomed the news and it's a major victory for the association, which has been campaigning for the Department for Transport to axe the tax disc for a number of years as part of a wider streamlining of DVLA services. Once used as a visible means of demonstrating that a vehicle has been taxed, the disc is no longer required because this can instantly be confirmed by accessing DVLA computers.

“It is great that the Red Tape Challenge we participated in last year is continuing to bring results,” said BVRLA chief executive, John Lewis. “We estimate that removing this pointless piece of paper would save the government around £90m a year and produce major administrative cost savings for fleet operators as well.”

What do you think about this? Would you miss affixing the paper disc into your magnetic holder? I will keep an eye out for further details on this as to if or when this may happen.
