"White Van Man could become a rolling radio relay"

I found an interesting article recently that suggests that taller vehicles such as vans can make fantastic more reliable radio relays. The technology designed to allow automobiles to "talk" to each other, coined as V2V (vehicle to vehicle), was designed primarily for use as safety warnings and for traffic information. With use of this type of technology, advanced motoring possibilities are endless and perhaps an automated motor way system is in our future.

The article titled "White Van Man could become a rolling radio relay" written by Simon Sharwood and posted on The Register on December 10, 2012, provides details of research conducted by two Universities that studied how “Tall Vehicle Relaying (TVR), a scheme that would see bigger vehicles relay signals between cars to give communications a better chance of succeeding," was possibly the way forward.

The Universities conducted a host of experiments to point out the benefits, including using the services of a Mercedes Sprinter and Fiat Ducato van to help out. The article provides an infographic showing how taller vehicles would better suit this technology. The full data from the research can be found in a paper published in the Cornell University Library which you can link to online from the article.

Just imagine, your van could one day be a fully autonomous vehicle.  What are your thoughts on all of this, too much or not soon enough?
