The benefits of cold weather tyres

According to a recent survey conducted by online tyre retailer Delticom, trading in the UK as mytyres.co.uk, a large amount of driver's did not know of the benefits of fitting winter tyres onto their vehicles. The survey also showed that many of these drivers rated being able to maintain mobility during winter conditions as a high priority. Were you aware that when the air temperature drops below 7 degrees Celsius your summer tyres, which are fitted to most new cars in the UK, do not perform as well as winter or cold weather tyres which have the capability of not just dealing with snow but also coping with icy conditions as well? And drivers are six times more likely to have an accident in winter months and nearly half of all accident claims are made during winter(Source: Continental Tyres press information, 11/2012)

Delticom's recent post says, "The major benefits of fitting winter tyres is to stay safe on the road and to be prepared if wintery road conditions arrive overnight. Unlike summer tyres they do not harden at low temperatures, they provide much better grip in wintery conditions, such as ice, slush and snow. Moreover, winter tyres have the ability of giving shorter braking distances on snow covered roads. This all contributes to staying safe on the road during winter driving conditions."

It's not a legal requirement in the UK for drivers to keep two sets of wheels and tyres – a set of 'summer' tyres and a set of specialist 'winter' tyres, however with all of the snow and ice currently on our roads making driving conditions difficult if not also dangerous, this post is a good reminder to consider purchasing winter tyres. The AA also acknowledge the benefits of these tyres in that they are specifically designed to retain flexibility in low temperatures (below +7C) and give good braking/traction performance on snow/ice as well as on wet roads in cold conditions. If the cost of buying two sets of tyres is just too expensive, you might consider snow chains to use in an emergency or as an alternative you could consider buying All Season Tyres, although these may not be as good as the best specialist tyre, but can work better on wintry roads than a summer tyre and you won't have the hassle of changing them when winter is over. In any case, whatever you decide, please keep safe on the snow filled icy roads this week.
