2013 Van registrations off to a positive start

Keeping up with the latest vehicle registration and sales data information has been a bit dizzying with one month seeing a reported increase and the next an almighty fall. There was however some good news this week in regards to increased commercial vehicle and van registrations as reported by the SMMT. Alas, truck registrations did not fare as well in the first month of the New Year.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) recent post shows that from the month of January 2013, commercial vehicle registrations rose 5.6% to 18,931 units. Truck registrations fell 19.6%, to 2,882 units in January, but were still 2.1% up for the rolling 12 months.

Van registrations grew 11.9% to 16,049 units at the start of the year, but remained down for the rolling year. The biggest contributor to that increase sees Vans > 2.5 - 3.5t at 8,084 new registrations for 2013, up 3.7% from last January. The second highest registration was seen in Vans <= 2.0t.

"2013 is set to be a telling year for the commercial vehicle sector with van registrations off to a good start and the truck sector's performance under close scrutiny ahead of the introduction of Euro 6 from January 2014," said Nigel Base, SMMT Commercial Vehicle Manager. "Van registrations were up 12% in the month and SMMT forecasts that the light commercial vehicle sector will grow almost 5% over the year, with new models and greater business confidence driving the market."

As for the new car market, the SMMT feel that it's off to a promising start for the New Year and reports that UK new car registrations rose 11.5% to 143,643 units in January 2013. Growth was boosted by 15.9% rise in private registrations during the month with all fuel types showing growth in January as well. Alternatively-fuelled cars posted a 7.9% rise in volumes, while growth in private and small car demand helped petrol cars see their market share rise.
