A reminder to small businesses to keep mobile office equipment safe

According to a recent media release from AXA Business Insurance UK, the steady increase in commercial vehicles/vans becoming mobile offices has sparked concern over the potential risks of losing such high priced items like smart phones, tablets, sat navs, etc. through theft while being left in vehicles.

The article titled, "The rise of the 'mobile office' leaves businesses vulnerable" posted on AXA's newsroom website, suggests that small businesses that have now come to rely on such high end technology in their vans, may need to take better precautions when it comes to making sure the equipment is secure and not left in plain sight for opportunistic thieves to get hold of. A majority of those businesses would be left devastated if their mobile office equipment were to be stolen from their vans.

AXA Business Insurance conducted a survey which shows the growing number of van drivers that now coordinate their businesses from their vehicles. The number has increased over the last five years with some now carrying upwards of £1000 worth of equipment. Make sure you do everything you can to safeguard these valuable by using alarms, locking all doors, and keeping them out of sight or you could be left uninsured by failing to take due care and attention as per some insurance policies terms.

One other thing to consider when choosing insurance cover for your van is to know the actual monetary amount of the equipment you may have in the van at any one time. Be aware that some policies only cover up to a few hundred pounds for lost or stolen items, but the cost of your mobile office equipment may exceed the cover limit and therefore leave you severely out of pocket if the worst should happen. AXA Business Insurance provide up to £250 for items stolen from a van as part of its standard van policy. With the average cost of a laptop or tablet at about £300 plus the cost of any other devices on board, it's extremely important to keep these items locked up safe and out of view when not in your van. AXA’s post is a great reminder to keep your small business’ mobile office safe.
