VW introduce a special edition van – the Caddy Edition 30

For those looking for something a little more swanky and exclusive when purchasing a new van, Volkswagen has just the right model for you. To celebrate 30 years and three generations of its compact Caddy van, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has launched a stylish and desirable special edition – the Caddy Edition 30. But if you fancy one, better act fast, as only 117 of this limited edition model will be made available in the UK. The Caddy Edition 30 is now available in Volkswagen Van Centre showrooms, with retail prices of £17,660 (excluding VAT) for manual models, or £19,060 (excluding VAT) with the DSG transmission.

Volkswagen posted details of this ultra rare van yesterday, saying the Caddy Edition 30 will feature Bluetooth connectivity, Climatic air conditioning, leather steering wheel, an upgraded RCD 310 radio/CD unit, electric windows, electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors, tailgate with heated rear window and wash/wipe, height adjustable driver’s and passenger’s seats, plus front fog lights. The superior Timo upholstery is standard, while for even more luxury, models with DSG transmission feature alcantara leather upholstery.

Although with the extra 'luxury' features in the posher model, I somehow don't see this van appealing to many of my tradesmen mates, at least not the ones that will be using it for the everyday wear and tear of business. I don’t even allow shoes to be worn anywhere near my cheap leather sofa. Imagine the cleaning costs for the van pictured above with its white leather seats.  The photo of the large load space does get me excited though.

The exterior design resembles other sporty Volkswagen vans, such as the Transporter Sportline. Caddy Edition 30 will have Volkswagen’s refined 2.0-litre TDI 140 PS engine and has the performance to go from zero to 62 mph in just 10 seconds (10.1 for DSG models). It is also going to be economical with combined fuel consumption of 47.1 mpg (44.8 DSG), and low emissions of 158 g/km (166 DSG). Low insurance groups of 6E and 7E for manual and DSG models, respectively, also help reduce running costs.

Volkswagen's first Caddy, introduced in 1983, was based on the Golf Mk I pick-up body, but was also available with a hardtop. The Mk II model was introduced in 1995, initially as a van, followed later by a pick-up version, and the current, third generation superseded it in 2003, with the addition of the long wheelbase Caddy Maxi in 2007.
