All-new Ford EcoSport for Europe debuts

Today is the exciting opening of the Geneva Motor Show for media representatives. Press days are March 5-6, 2013 before the show officially opens to the public on March 7th. There will no doubt be a lot of write ups and photos of some amazing vehicle concepts and long awaited debuts from top auto manufacturers. I just read more details on Ford's European version of the all-new EcoSport SUV, which just had its big reveal today at the show.

The EcoSport is built on Ford’s global B-segment platform and will offer a range of efficient powertrains, including the 125PS 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine -- International Engine of the Year -- an 110PS 1.5-litre petrol engine, and a 90PS 1.5-litre diesel engine expected to deliver class-leading fuel efficiency.

“All-new Ford EcoSport for Europe is extremely economical, flexible and stylish, and will – alongside the new B-MAX compact multi-activity vehicle, the best-selling Fiesta and all-new Tourneo Courier – complete a comprehensive small car line-up for Europe,” said Nick FitzGerald, chief programme engineer, EcoSport.

From the look of the photos provided in Ford's press release, the EcoSport certainly delivers a more sporty and contemporary look. Although I would prefer mine an alternate paint colour. The large front grille and high driving position give it that rugged SUV style and feel. Ford says it will offer class leading small car fuel efficiency. Could this be a good option for doing the school run or taking family holidays in?  Realistically, though it would have to be economical enough to claim the space of a small family car. If it does what Ford promises, perhaps it could?  The EcoSport definitely has the edge on those seeking a small fun SUV that offers that 'go anywhere' appeal, especially if it comes with Ford’s voice-activated in-car connectivity system, SYNC and an extensive package of driver assistance technologies including Electronic Stability Program and Hill Launch Assist.

Ford has not yet released pricing details, but hinted that the EcoSport will go on sale later this year along with the next generation Ford Edge, a larger and more premium utility vehicle. I can’t wait for more information and will post as soon as more is available.
