EMPLOYERS have praised talented Swansea students for their valuable input this summer. Several said the Swansea University undergraduates they took on completed useful projects that they simply hadn't had time to do.
More than 50 second year students were found placements as part of the university's Spin (Swansea Paid Internship Network) scheme, which was supported by the South Wales Evening Post.
Rod Lloyd, director of Low Cost Vans, Neath, said intern Julian Wojtowicz focused on developing social media and budget analysis.
"The business has benefited with a highly intelligent and thoughtful student able to complete a project in the time allocated that added true value to ongoing marketing efforts," he said. "This project would otherwise have been delayed or fallen by the wayside altogether."
Nigel Williams, finance director of Castell Howell Foods, said accounting and finance student Andra Botescu analysed customer product returns and made IT recommendations.
"The placement worked out really well and we were delighted with Andra's contribution," he said.
Tim Christopher marketing coordinator at DTR Medical, Swansea, said student Dafydd Nash quickly developed a clear understanding of the company and its customers, and even gave a presentation at a quarterly meeting.
Wyn Jenkins, managing director of Swansea firm Seren Global Media, said intern Tom Sandry researched and developed new business plans.
He said: "This is not something the company's existing staff would have found the time to do."
Another Swansea firm, UNIT4 Business Software, took on two students who focused on research and development and standards compliance. "UNIT4 was delighted to be part of the Spin scheme," said research and development director David Harwood.
Save Britain Money Group took on two students, who examined call centre management information and carried out accounts analysis.
"The scheme provided two very credible and willing students which has enabled us to complete some key projects," said human resources director Phil Elliot.
A trio of students, meanwhile, carried out projects at Llanelli-based Schaeffler (UK) Ltd's production and technology departments.
"We have been very pleased with their contribution," said HR director Adrian Roberts.
Pontardawe-based engineering firm Wall Colmonoy said its intern, Ruth Jayeola, carried out risk assessments, a noise survey and reviewed the use of chemicals.
