Run a better van fleet with Van Excellence

If you are a van operator, whether running your own individual business or a fleet, it’s important to stay up to date with all operating regulations and to ensure you are complying with standards of van operator best practices. A good place to find the best advice from a practical, operational viewpoint, and offering up peace of mind surrounding the operation of your van fleet is Van Excellence.  For those not already familiar with the trade association and the Van Excellence code; “Van Excellence was launched in order to promote high standards of van operation and driving by accrediting operators against a code of good practice”. Members help to promote the Van Excellence Code amongst their customers and encourage its standards to be adopted and followed throughout the light commercial vehicle sector. It is open to van operators of all sizes and business sectors and includes non FTA members.

Announced at last year’s Van Excellence conference, the news that VOSA (Vehicle Operating and Standards Agency) has revealed that in light of a number of VOSA checks where light goods vehicles are overweight three quarters of the time they will be cracking down on those still not complying, and would be undertaking a programme of targeted enforcement checks on vans in all the major towns and cities throughout Great Britain. As this will be a great concern to van operators of all sizes, this year’s Van Excellence conference sponsored by Van Excellence industry partners ATS Euromaster, BT Fleet, Hertz Van Rental, Lex Autolease and TomTom Business Solutions, will offer a key session focusing on load security and overloading. While other key conference sessions include:

  • Cost management – the hidden costs of operation

  • In-cab distractions - how to reduce risk

  • Lowering your carbon footprint – operator case study

  • Technology developments – telematics and driver behaviour

The conferences are due to be held on Tuesday 8 April (Elstree, London) and Thursday 10 April (Manchester).
Mark Cartwright, FTA's Head of Vans and Logistics Buyers, said:

“VOSA has made it clear that it has identified non-compliant van operators and that it will be making targeted stops. We all know that keeping vans within legal weight limits can be a challenge for many operators, particularly those using vans as mobile toolboxes, and it is vitally important that we focus on load security and overloading at the Van Excellence conferences to ensure best practice is identified for all.”

This is a great scheme, in my opinion, and if operating a better van fleet was one of your New Year's resolutions, consider becoming a member. For more information on how to join and how you and/or your business can benefit from the scheme, please click here.
