Dashboard Cameras - will they catch on?

Dashboard cameras or Dash Cams are on the rise in the UK market but will they soon be a staple in every car?  In-car cameras can record valuable footage in the event of a crash, as the evidence it provides can be relied on in court should the worst happen. Some cameras can also record rear views & some equipped with infra-red sensors to enable recordings in the dark too.

Insurers and law enforcement are the most likely to benefit from this device being used by consumers. This is because they greatly contribute to the resolution of traffic accidents and claims. It can be an accident due to an unexpected manoeuvre from the car in front of you or a fraudulent incident that is almost impossible to recognise or simply a solution that will require a detailed examination later.

There a number of benefits that could come in the future as a result of dashboard cameras. Firstly insurer discounts, there could be insurer products linked to having a video camera in your car. This could also significantly reduce claim-processing time for the insurers since they can find out the truth much faster.

Another benefit could be the creation of new insurance products for customers. For example a side collision between two cars on a road when it appears that both were on or over the centre line and there is no way to prove it without a video recording.

In the future there could be a built-in car option for dash cams. They could find their way into mass car production as a special feature. Dash cams could cause the extension of pay-as-you-drive or ‘black box’. A black box policy currently provides the opportunity for driver to reduce their insurance premiums with safe driving. It would be a logical extension of this insurance that can complement it with more data & insight.

The last benefit of dashboard cameras is fun! Why don’t you use your camera while on a road trip? You would easily be able to create a nice road trip video combining the best video clips.
