Crashing your car for quick cash is not a good idea, here's why.

Chances are you might know someone who has ‘accidentally on purpose’ smashed their phone to get the latest upgrade purely because it comes in rose gold, or has a better camera lens than its predecessor.

Some car owners have initiated the same practice in order to get a quick buck. It may sound like a good idea on paper but the reality is far from that, with devastating consequences beginning to ripple out across the whole motor industry.

Crash for Cash scams are not just effecting innocent drivers across the UK as I explained in my blog a few weeks ago. Smaller van hire companies across the country are potentially at risk of having to fold because of the overall cost of these bogus accidents.

Several business owners in the North West of England, a region that currently sits in the top ten worst places for the scam, are paying tens of thousands of pounds to settle this fraudulent claims, and some of the smaller lease hire companies are going bust because they just cannot afford the often high costs of fighting the cases.

How can you protect yourself and your business against such scams? Unfortuantley there is not a great deal you can do. Those who are intent on making money this way do not work to a time schedule, and are targeting almost everyone and anyone. However, there are a couple of things that you can do which will help protect you, should you ever been on the receiving end of this horrible crime.

Tracking

Fit a tracking device to your vehicle or fleet of vehicles. This will allow you to show conclusive evidence in court that you were a specific place when the alleged accident took place, which could have occurred miles away from where your vehicle actually was. It is that added bit of protection should another driver attempt to lie and say your car hit them.

Dash-cams

Should you actually get hit by someone who is aiming to make some money out of the scam, a dash-cam could be the difference between you having to pay thousands in compensation or walking out of court with the perpetrator being exposed.

Although the initial set up may cost a little bit of money, having a camera installed at the front and rear of the car will give you conclusive proof when someone hits you on purpose. Take precautions because this crime is showing no signs of abating and you do not want to become its next victim.
