Scrappage – an aFORDable option?

As the sale of new cars falls and the government announces that no more new petrol or diesel cars will be manufactured after 2040, car giants are finding ways to keep the wheels turning - Ford has just come up with the latest.

The company will take £2,000 off the price of new cars if customers trade in their old vehicle – including old petrol cars. Alongside this, the old cars traded in will go straight for scrap; not be resold.

This is what Andy Barratt the Managing Director of Ford had to say about it: “Ford shares society’s concerns over air quality. Removing generations of the most polluting vehicles will have the most immediate positive effect on air quality, and this Ford scrappage scheme aims to do just that.”

That’s all great but er… why is the new Ford scrappage scheme only available up until December this year? Anything to do with sales figures?

Maybe it’s churlish to focus on this too much. The Ford deal is stepping things up a gear alongside other manufacturers - BMW and Mercedes recently offered a £2,000 scrappage scheme too but it was only available for old diesel cars.

And as the president of the AA, Edmund King said: "These initiatives are obviously there to boost sales of new cars, but if they are going to take polluting diesel cars off the road, then that has to be a good thing.”

I guess the big question is what is the government planning to do. Apparently, they are considering their own scrappage scheme – remember back in 2009 when the Labour government gave £2,000 towards the cost of a new car in return for trading in old vehicles?

It’s all a step in the right direction but if it’s the great deal that you’re after, might be worth holding out a while to see how good the offers get.
