Are you breaking the law with your windscreen clearing habits?

You may feel like you don’t have a moment spare in the busy morning dash, but be sure to save a few minutes to de-ice your car window legally. Yes I did say legally…

Little did I know until reading a recent news article, that poor windscreen defrosting management can actually mean you’re breaking the law. Confused? Well it makes sense when you think about it…

What do many people do to warm their car up and thereby defrost their windows? Get the engine running! This is fine in itself of course, the problem is when people leave their keys in the car while the engine is running and go back in the house to finish breakfast/pack a school lunch/look for a lost library book.

Leaving your car with the engine running on a public highway breaks Rule 123 of the Highway Code. Alongside that, you don’t stand much chance on the insurance if someone decides they fancy driving your car to work instead of theirs that day.

The other way to break the law and end up receiving a fine at the start of the day (nice) is by not removing whatever weather it is that could obstruct your view in the car. That means snow – all snow must be removed before you drive off. Don’t think you can leave it up to your hardy windscreen wipers to do the job.

And frost… No, it’s not good enough to have a tiny little hole that you can peer out of when you drive off. You need to clear your windscreen fully so that you have full visibility.

So don’t forget to prioritise your windscreen care management in the coming cold mornings. It’ll help keep you on the right side of the law, save you a potential fine and all in all, stand you in better stead than that extra five minutes spent looking for matching socks.
