Critters in your car – and how to stop them getting in
When you
find an old crisp packet or a leftover sandwich bag in your car, that’s par for
the course. However, you probably don’t expect to check your engine and be
greeted by a rat gorging on a takeaway feast.
For Laura
Frackelton, this was the nightmare that awaited her upon opening her partner’s
car bonnet. Earlier this August in Huyton, Mersey, she found a rat’s
nest burrowed in the engine of the car – with the remains of chicken nuggets, chicken
wings and other assorted bits clogged inside.
This is not
an isolated case either – reports of possums, cats and even a deer being trapped or choosing to make
their home in people’s cars are more widespread than you would think! After
all, engines create a warm and cosy environment for small mammals to live in.
Continuing
from the theme of last week’s blog, we once again look at the bizarre things
found in some people’s vehicles and the unfortunate results. However, this time
we’ve got some advice about keeping out the little critters this summer.
11. ALWAYS keep any pet food you own out
of reach. Dog food, bird seed or cat food all make up the crème de la crème of
most animal appetites.
22. Fill your car engine with odours that
repel other animals, such as peppermint oil, used cat litter or red pepper.
33. This might sound unorthodox, but
leaving your car bonnet UP might prevent creatures from nesting. In the case of
rodents, they much prefer dark, quiet and enclosed spaces.
44. Make sure to block any small openings
that would lead to your engine, some drivers have been inventive with this and
used wire screen.
55. Finally, and what might perhaps be a
non-brainer, don’t leave your car disused for too long. Frequent trips will
upset any potential nester.
However, if
the cats, small dogs or the elusive deer accidentally find themselves in your
car – we’d strongly advise that you contact the RSPCA or your local animal
welfare charity/sanctuary to make sure they are given the best care possible.
