This could change your mind about electric cars

By now we are all aware of the benefits that driving an electric car bring; less emissions, a quieter engine and lower running costs than a traditional car. But there’s one thing that puts many of us off making the investment into an eco-friendly vehicle – the lack of charging ports across the UK. However, there is some good news that might convince you to think greener.

Owning an electric car will become even more convenient in 2019 as Volkswagen partners up with supermarket giant Tesco to bring over 2,400 charging points to their stores, spread across 600 locations. This will mean an impressive 14% increase in charging ports across the UK, an important move to reducing emissions on the road. Even better news is that the standard ports will be free to use, so you’ll be saving on those costly petrol fill-ups.

This partnership isn’t the only one in the UK to be rolling out charging ports in 2019. Pub chain Marston’s have teamed up with Engenie to do the same. 400 rapid charging points will be installed into their car parks, meaning they’ll have 1,600 points in total. You’ll be able to leave your car to charge up while you enjoy a meal – no more standing around to fill up your fuel-run car anymore!

While London sees 10% of the total charging points in the UK, Wales still has some way to go to make electric cars a convenient option for the everyday person. With Tesco and Marston leading the way to the easy access of these points, this could be good news for the rest of the UK to make greener cars more viable.

This doesn’t mean that Wales are unaware of the benefits of electric cars. Luxury car manufacturer Aston Martin have decided to make their newest electric car model in St. Athan, Vale of Glamorgan. The Welsh government has given £5.8m in support to the company, a positive step towards cleaner and more efficient cars on the roads of Wales. Plaid Cymru are also working on bringing greener energy to Wales, prioritising £2m towards infrastructure for electric vehicles. Not only will you get more choice in electric cars in 2019, but you’ll know the Welsh government are aiming to make them more convenient to run.

The desire for electric cars is growing throughout the country. This year, Prince Charles replaced his petrol-run Jaguar with an electric model for all of his official duties. Bristol are also making moves to increase the number of charging ports in the city. Clearly, Tesco and Marston’s plans are justified, and will convince any eco-conscious people that electric cars are the way forward.
