5 challenging roads you can drive on across the world

Are you bored of driving round the same places day in, day out? Are you looking for something more challenging, which pushes your skills to the limit? We’ve compiled a list of some of the hardest roads to drive on in the world.

Himalayan roads

Built right into the face of the mountains, these are considered some of the most dangerous roads in the world. Prone to floods and nasty weather conditions, these narrow and unpaved roads should only be tackled by a confident driver. If you do brave it, you’ll get to see some of the most spectacular views.

Dalton Highway

In the chilly climate of Alaska, this 414 miles long road has 240 miles of pure scenery. There are no petrol stations or hotels on this stretch, just a long road and a view of the mountains. This would need very careful planning, but you won’t get this experience anywhere else.

Skippers Canyon Road

Set in New Zealand’s South Island, this narrow gravel road has sheer drops. Nicknamed ‘Hell’s Gate’, you won’t be able to rent a car on this road as companies think the road is too dangerous. You might find yourself reversing for a long while if someone else drives towards you as there’s no room to overtake. The beautiful view will be more than worth it, though.

Hardknott Pass

If you’re looking for something closer to home, Hardknott Pass is one to try. Full of hairpin bends and a steep incline, you’ll need to make sure your breaks work before you tackle this road. Situated in the Lake District, you’re sure to come across some of the best views Britain has to offer.

Guoliang Tunnel

The village of Guoliang in China wanted a road that would connect them to the towns around them. When the government refused, thirteen of its villagers took matters into their own hands. Using hammers and chisels, they carved out this road themselves. It’s a dangerous road that requires all of your concentration but how could you pass up driving on a road with such an incredible backstory?
