The Henry Ford Museum, Michigan, USA

Contrary to the name, this museum isn’t just full of Ford cars. It was actually founded by Henry Ford in 1933 to showcase his collection of items that painted a picture of technological advancement. After Ford’s death, the museum evolved into what it is today, staying true to his vision. Besides its large automotive collections, it also holds fine furniture and folk art. There are a number of pieces in the museum that are vital pieces of history, such as the bus that Rosa Parks refused to give her sea on, the car that John F. Kennedy was sat in when he was assassinated and Thomas Edison’s laboratory.

British Motor Museum, Warwick, UK

Looking for something a bit closer to home? The British Motor Museum is perfect if you want a day out with the family. Its collection covers the history of the car industry in Britain, and not only does it have cars of the past but also prototypes of cars that never came to be. As well as its permanent collection, they also have regularly changing temporary exhibitions so make sure to check what’s on before planning your trip.

Ferrari Museum, Maranello, Italy

If you’re a fan of the luxury car make, you will want to take a trip to Maranello. You can also sign up to a guided tour if you want to learn more about them. The Musei Fan Experience gives you some extras, such as a Ferrari cap and a group pit stop experience. You can also have a try of the driving simulator, which lets you drive on some of the world’s most famous racetracks in a Prancing Horse F1 single-seater. There’s also another museum in Modena with a regular shuttle bus travelling between the two, perfect if you want to make a day of it.

As the makers of the first gasoline-powered car, what better company to have a car museum. There are over 160 vehicles on display, old and new, as well as regular events. Again, you can have a guided tour, which we would recommend if you want to fully immerse yourself. This one is a must visit if you want to know more about how the car came to be or if you’re interested in history in general.

Brooklands Museum, Weybridge, UK

Another one that’s on your doorstep, this museum will appeal to racing fans. Housed in a number of listed buildings, it’s set in the former site of the world’s first purpose built motor racing circuit.
